The building had a T-plan design and opened in November 1844. In 1863 it was taken over by visiting preachers and they conducted Gaelic services for herring fishermen. The building survived into the 20th century but was eventually demolished when it fell out of use. The town of Wick has had multiple Free Churches in the past but now there is only one. The congregation of the Wick Free Church of Scotland has no established church building but they meet in St John's Episcopal Church hall located in Moray Street.
